This is an opinion article.

I hate the narrative that guys with attitudes shouldn’t play for the Mets. The 1986 team was filled with hell-raising, cocaine-snorter, dirt bags. Yet when it was all said and done they won that year. The Mets need to light a fire under their asses.

Why am I bringing this up? Because I’ve seen people say to me that they don’t want Bryce Harper or Manny Machado because of their attitudes or playing styles. These guys would be game changers!

Harper is not coming off of a bad year. He had a down first half. Then he averaged .300 and slugged .538 after he won the home run derby during the All-Star break. He hit 34 homers and totaled 100 RBIs. If you take issue with Harper’s fire, yet live in the past and praise the 1986 Mets, who often looked like Harper out there, please try again.

Machado hit a combined .297 between the Orioles and Los Angeles Dodgers. He also hit a combined 37 homers, with 107 RBIs. He hit .227 in the postseason, though two of his three hits in the NL divisional series were home runs. He’s a 4 time all star with 3 seasons top 10 in war and he has 2 gold gloves at third base.

It’s just unrealistic to think everyone’s going be David Wright or Brandon Nimmo. Matt Harvey was a dick, Noah Syndergaard is a dick, etc. Its just a narrative people create so they can fall back on it when the Mets don’t sign either. “They were dirty players anyway” “They had attitude anyway”.

Yes. Machado played dirty in the playoffs but he is one of the best players in the league.

“If it’s dirty, it’s dirty,” Machado told The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal during the Fall Classic. “I try to go out there and win for my team. I can’t do nothing about (what people say about me).”

The Mets have employeed wife beaters such as Jose Reyes and Jeurys Familia and fans have overlooked those facts and yet it would be a terrible idea to bring in superstars who have “attitude” problems. Interesting to say the least.

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. The Mets have had 8 losing seasons in the last 10 years. Fans wonder why he suck year after year?  “Nice guys” that hustle all the time does not mean that player is a superstar. Machado is a superstar. The Mets need an impact player now before the clock runs out with their starting pitching crop of talent.

I’d take one of those players in a heart beat. They have fire and a desire to win. They played on teams that have sucked/ or their playoff run dream came crashing down ( Nationals in every NLDS series). If Harper and Machado go to a contending team in 2019 they are going to light it up out there. You just better hope it’s the Mets.
