As Met fans we’re a small population of people that voluntarily put ourselves through years of suffering, but for what? Let me tell you something, we come from the same city as the Yankees, we could have all easily been Yankee fans (and been happy) but it’s too easy to be a Yankee fan. We chose the Mets, me personally because my dad would have disowned me but still HEY! We chose the Mets.
I was there the night we signed Yoenis Cespedes at the deadline and Wilmer Flores hit the walk off. As Met fans we didn’t have a playoff birth on our mind (let alone a World Series). But as we jumped around, hugged and cheered random people. We were just Met fans. That was the moment I knew that I was home, no matter where I ended up in life I could ponder upon a Met game and be home.
We never stopped believing. I know I’m not the only one but the Mets have gotten me through some tough times, all of the ups and downs. All of those nights in high school and college debating what I’m doing (in a time that everything was changing so quickly), but the only constant, April to September, was NEW YORK F*CKING METS baseball.
MOVING FORWARD: Like a lot of you, I keep living in the past. For the last 23 years of my life I’ve had to listen to my dad talk about the 1986 Mets and how I’ll never witness a season like that. As Met fans we love to live in the past but alright folks, this is a long time coming, but it’s over… and specifically 2015 is over. I understand that it’s a hard concept to grasp, but now’s the time to move on. Just like a lot of you I lived through 2000, 2006, and 2015 and it gets harder and harder to let go of all of the “what if’s,” but its time too move forward, 2016 happened, we lost. 2017 happened, we sucked. 2018 happened, we sucked (and yet again had a losing season with a potential CY Young). That fairy tale land we live in where we’ll rally and win a pennant again is gone. It’s time to move forward.
Where do we go from here? I don’t hold a crystal ball but as our man Terry once stated, “YOU GOTTA GIVE US A SHOT!”. We need to fight. With the help of Mike Francesa/Chris Russo and outrage from the fan base we were able to sign Mike Piazza. Do you see a difference? I don’t. With free agents like Bryce Harper and Manny Machado on the market it’s not the time to take a back seat to the Dodgers, Phillies, Red Sox and god forgive me for even saying it, the Yankees.
As fans, lets flood these threads/forums and lets push. Let’s give ourselves a shot. We have a new GM now, remember when Omar first came (we went from a joke to a contender), and you’re crazy to think that wasn’t because of the fans. It’s time to get over this content, losing mentality that we have, and it’s time to fight and start believing.
It probably won’t be 2019, 2020 or 2021, but that doesn’t mean we can’t stress out the competition. There’s no point of this post, but to address the current climate of our fanbase. This isn’t the time to fade to the back and only watch in October.
Remember where you came from, we’re the New York Mets. Lets pack that f*cking stadium, lets watch the games and lets start f*cking believing again. Regardless if we go 0-162 or 162-0, this is our team, so lets get CITI HYPED THE F*CK UP and remind this team what city they represent. LET’S GO METS BABY!.
