According to SNYtv, the Mets and Indians have discussed a trade for catcher Yan Gomes.
Yan Gomes is regarded as a solid pitch framer, posted the 2nd-best pop time to 2B (Min. 10 attempts) in 2018, has double-digit power, & very reasonable contracts for the next 3 seasons.
Gomes is earning $7M in 2019 with $9M club option for ‘20, $11M opt for ‘21. Rival exec says Cleveland is “scrambling to get young players.” Perez and Haase are the only other catchers on roster.
The question is who would the Mets give up in this trade and is Gomes a good fit for the team.
Gomes last 4 seasons:
- 2015: 95 games played
- 2016: 74 games played
- 2017:105 games played
- 2018: 112 games played (Huge step for Gomes health wise)
If I am the Mets I am not giving up any worthy prospects for an injury prone catcher.
Do the Mets take a risk and trade prospects for Gomes? His pop time would certainly help the pitching staff (Syndergaard) give up less stolen bases. He is also very familiar with Mets manager and former Indians pitching coach, Mickey Callaway.
