“From the onset we wanted to create depth and versatility at a variety of positions. The shortstop position in particular was one that we felt like we wanted to continue to create options.”- Brodie Van Wagenen

The Mets have agreed to terms on a minor-league contract with veteran infielder Adeiny Hechavarria. His role in 2019 will be backup to Amed Rosario at shortstop.

Hechavarria is a career .254 hitter with a .635 OPS over seven seasons. Mickey Callaway can use him as a late inning defensive replacement if needed. Since 2016, Hechavarria has a 3.3 dWAR and 17 DRS which is the fifth-highest among shortstops.

We want to be the best defensive team we can be because of our pitching, and we are going to continue to address that and make sure we are cognizant of that as we move forward.”- Mickey Callaway

“This is a team that we do think can contend, and you can’t contend unless you have depth and have major league players to come in and fill in.”- Brodie Van Wagenen
