Marcus Stroman is under fire after butchering his dogs ears. Don’t believe me? Check Twitter.
Stroman’s puppy is named Shugo and he got his little guy on February 11th 2019. Shugo is an adorable puppy (see picture below) and four days ago he was pictured with long ears. Fast forward to today and Shugo’s ears look very different.
The veterinary procedure is known as “cosmetic otoplasty”. It is usually performed on puppies at 7 to 12 weeks of age. After 16 weeks, the procedure is more painful and the animal has greater pain memory. Up to 2/3 of the ear flap may be removed in a cropping operation, and the wound edges are closed with stitches.
Today, many countries ban cropping and docking because they consider the practices unnecessary, painful, cruel or mutilation. However, in the United States cropping of a dogs ear is unrestricted, meaning it is not illegal. That being said, although it is legal in the United States, fans of Stroman are upset. Blue Jay fans specifically have tweeted at Stroman with their displeasure. In Canada it is illegal to crop a dogs ears. Ontario and Alberta are the only remaining provinces where the decision to operate is up to individual veterinarians.
