The Mets took a 130-mile bus ride to Sarasota yesterday to play the Orioles today and then they have to get on a plane and go on to a workout in Syracuse on Tuesday. According to the Daily News, the Mets budget prevented the team from purchasing MLB quality equipment for Syracuse workout.
The players and specifically Noah Syndergaard are frustrated. Noah expressed his displeasure by saying “I don’t know whose idea it was, but it’s not a smart one. I don’t think that’s conducive for winning ballgames really. … It doesn’t make much sense.’’
“We’re going to Sarasota and then to Syracuse, and then we are not going to New York. You would think we would go to New York to get like, as adults, our affairs in order, but no we have to go to Syracuse first.”- Noah Syndergaard
I have to agree with Syndergaard here. It is pointless for them to have to travel all the way upstate to just work out with crappy quality equipment. On top of that the team is stressing to the players about their diet and a good nights sleep but are contradicting themselves by making the players travel on no rest.
Syndergaard also spoke about Jacob deGrom. He is saying what we are all thinking: Pay the man! “I think Jake is the best pitcher in baseball right now,’’ Syndergaard said.
“I think he deserves whatever amount. He’s worth it. I want to keep him happy so when it does come time to reach free agency, he stays on our side, a pitcher for the Mets. I just think they should quit all this fuss and pay the man already.’’ -Noah Syndergaard
I hope this tension does not carry into the first week of the season. The Mets need to pay deGrom now.
