This afternoon, the Mets signed outfielder Matt Kemp to a minor league deal. Why is this an extremely Mets move?

Kemp is free.

Kemp is currently recovering from an injury.

Kemp is a depth move.

Kemp is horrible defensively and is best used in a limited capacity in the outfield.

Kemp is a former star well past his prime, who struggled in his last stint earlier this year in Cincinatti and was released after breaking his rib.

But with the Mets having about 793 outfielders currently on the DL, it can’t hurt to have Kemp recovering should the injuries continue to pile up, which is certainly possible when on a nightly basis you’re fielding an outfield of JD Davis, Juan Lagares, Rajai Davis and Carlos Gomez in 2019.
