In last night’s game, the Mets broke a 2-2 score in the 7th by putting a dager in the Dodgers bullpen/ With the bases loaded and one out, Michael Conforto stepped to the plate looking to do some damage. On an 0-1 pitch, Conforto launched an opposite field Grand Slam to give the Mets a 6-2 lead. It was the first of his career. The Mets tacked on another run in the 8th and the bullpen secured a 7-3 victory.
In the Mets last 13 games, they are slugging .565 (95 total bases in 168 ABs) versus relief pitchers. That is the best in the majors in that span. The league average is .442.
Pete Alonso is crushing relief pitchers in 2019. He is hitting .343 against relief pitchers and owns a .420 on base percentage to go along with a nice .957 SLG and 1.377 OPS. 13 of his 17 home runs have come against opposing teams bullpens. He is batting .203 with a slugging percentage of .382 against starting pitchers.
This seems to be the Mets strength in 2019. From their very first game to April 11th the Mets were hitting .324 with 44 runs and an OPS of .954. They batted only .231 and scored only 25 runs against starters. The key to the Mets success will be keeping the game close and working counts on opposing teams starters to try and get to their bullpen.
Final thought: Lets hope they can hit against starting pitchers better going forward.
